The transmission of the file is generally quicker than WWW, but the difference is that it does not display on the screen of the viewer. New developments in display standards such as the Adobe Acrobat format on the World Wide Web will certainly change the situation further, but file transfers for printing hard copy on the recipient's end will probably remain important. Continuing development and adoption of the MIME standard will make it easier to send formatted documents directly through email, but for the immediate future "attached documents" are not always or completely platform independent.
